Camassei, Andrea

CAMASSEI, ANDREA. - Painter, b. at Bevagna on 2 Dec. 1602 and d. at Rome on 18 Aug. 1649. He was a disciple of Domenichino, but in his art he absorbed elements deriving from Sacchi, assuming an individuality that places him alongside the latter as the initiator of a typically Roman painterly current, despite his clear descent from the Bolognese stock.

He was a competitor of Pietro da Cortona in the decoration of the Palazzo Barberini and a collaborator of Sacchi in the works of the Lateran baptistery, where he left notable frescoes. Among the altarpieces, a Pietà in the church of the Cappuccini and an Assunta in the Pantheon are notable.
