Capriani, Francesco

CAPRIANI, FRANCESCO. - Architect and sculptor, b. at Volterra before 1540 and d. at Rome around 1601.

He worked in Rome; the facade of the church of S. Chiara (lost) and that of S. Maria di Monserrato are his, as well as the remodelling of the church of S. Maria in Aquiro, works in which he, while adhering to the Roman tradition of the late 16th century, confers on the volumes a crisp definition, and on the structures a logical solidity and compositional clarity of Tuscan taste. His masterpiece is the church of S. Giacomo in Augusta, with an elliptical plan whose major axis is perpendicular to the facade so as to diminish the centrality and let the perspective axis triumph. The church of S. Atanasio ai Greci has also been attributed to him.
