CHARLES EMMANUEL II, Duke of Savoy. - Born on June 20, 1634 to Victor Amadeus I of Savoy and Christine of Bourbon. He was duke from Oct. 14, 1638, but only nominally, because he effectively governed from 1663, that is, when his mother, who held the regency of the duchy, died. C. E. II's political position was sadly vassal to French policy (among other things, C. E. was obliged to support militarily France's war against Holland and, having gone to war with Genoa, had to accept the arbitration of Louis XIV). Toward the Curia he was jealous of his sovereign prerogatives (he opposed the tribunal of the Nunciature judging outside his State). Of brilliant life, he was not averse to devotion: he began the building of the chapel of the Holy Shroud. Died on June 12, 1675.
