CASSIAN OF IMOLA, Saint. - The place of birth and the time of death are unknown, just as the information regarding the circumstances of his martyrdom is very uncertain. Prudentius (Peristephanon, IX) testifies that he had seen at Imola a painting depicting a naked man surrounded by boys who were raging against him with their styluses, and that the custodian of the place explained to him that this was the martyr C., a schoolmaster, killed in that manner by his own pupils at the command of the magistrate, for having refused to sacrifice to idols.
This kind of martyrdom seems to have been modeled on that of St. Mark of Arethusa or on the account of the death of the treacherous schoolmaster, of which Titus Livy speaks (Ab Urbe condita, V. 27). It is certain, however, that in the 5th century the veneration of the martyr C. existed at Imola, with a church dedicated to him, and that his commemoration was held on August 13. Two groups of Passions of C. survive, one entirely dependent on Prudentius, the other on the Gesta ss. C., Ingenuini et Albuini (BHL 241, 1627, 4273).
