CALEPODIUS. - No liturgical or topographical document bears witness to the cult rendered to C. as a martyr apart from the Passio s. Callisti, which affirms his status as a priest of the Roman Church and says he was thrown into the Tiber and buried by the same pontiff Callistus in the cemetery of the same name, on the Via Aurelia. The same Passio, certainly not genuine, is also the first source that attests his cult among the Roman martyrs. In the same Passio and in the Lib. Pont.

the cemetery where Pope Callistus was laid is called the cemetery of C.; whereas in the depositio episcoporum and in the Liberian catalogue the cemetery of Callistus is indicated as the one at the third mile of the Via Aurelia, in which the popes Callistus and Julius were buried. But it is certain that his martyrdom was unknown in the first centuries.

The small cemetery of C. is located at the 3rd mile on the Via Aurelia, in the Villa Armellini (formerly Lamperini), opposite the farmhouse of St. Pius V. In the Middle Ages it was often confused with that of St. Pancras, and also called that of Callistus, from the tomb of this Pope, over which, in his time, Julius I had built a basilica, where he himself was buried. E. Stevenson found in 1881 the remains of the apse of the basilica, in the vicinity of which there is the entrance to the cemetery, today much devastated and with the galleries filled with rubble.
