CATHERINE (Marie-Catherine) of Saint Augustine. - Augustinian nun (in the world Catherine de Longpré), missionary in Canada, b. at St-Sauveur-le-Vicomte (diocese of Coutances, Normandy) on 3 May 1632, d. at Québec on 8 May 1668. Very young, she entered in October 1644 among the sisters of the Hôtel-Dieu of Bayeux and embarked four years later at La Rochelle for Canada; she lived twenty years at the Hôtel-Dieu of Québec, much esteemed by the bishop Msgr. de Laval, by the venerable Mary of the Incarnation and by the Jesuit superiors of the mission.

Her intense mystical life, hidden until her death, is known to us principally from her letters and from the Diary that she wrote by order of her confessors, Fathers Ragueneau (v.) and Chastelain; graced with great interior trials (with frequent diabolical interventions) and with high gifts of prayer, Mother C. of St. A. appears to us principally as a voluntary victim for the good of the Canadian church, in the most critical period of the colony. The process of beatification was begun at Québec.
