Catherine (Marie-Catherine) of Saint Augustine

CATERINA (MARIE-CATHERINE) di SANT'AGOSTINO. — Augustinian religious (in the world Catherine de Longpré), missionary in Canada, born at St-Sauveur-le-Vicomte (diocese of Coutances, Normandy) on 3 May 1632, died at Québec on 8 May 1668. At a very young age, in October 1644, she entered the convent of the nuns of the Hôtel-Dieu of Bayeux and, four years later, embarked at La Rochelle for Canada; she spent twenty years at the Hôtel-Dieu of Québec, highly esteemed by Bishop Mgr. de Laval, by the venerable Maria dell'Incarnazione, and by the Jesuit superiors of the mission.

Her intense mystical life, concealed until her death, is known to us chiefly through her letters and the Diary that she wrote at the order of her confessors, Ragueneau (v.) and Chastelain; endowed with great interior trials (including frequent diabolical interventions) and lofty gifts of prayer, Mother C. di S. A. appears to us principally as a voluntary victim for the good of the Canadian Church, during the colony’s most critical period. The process of beatification was initiated at Québec.
