RAGUENEAU, PAUL. - Missionary, b. in Parigi on 18 March 1608, d. there on 3 Sept. 1680.
On 21 Aug. 1626 he entered the Jesuit novitiate. On 28 June 1636 he arrived at Québec, and in 1638 he went among the Hurons. In 1645 he became superior of the missions in the country, where he remained until the dispersal of the tribe. The Hurons who escaped the massacre (1649) were led by R. to Québec, and the following year he was promoted to the general direction of the missions (1650-53). In 1657, together with Fr. Duperron, he began the evangelization of the Onontagués, who attempted to massacre the French: all fled secretly in Apr. 1658. In Aug. 1662 R. returned to France and was appointed procurator of the missions of New France.
His brother Fr. FRANCESCO R., a Jesuit, b. at Blois in 1597, entered the Jesuit novitiate in 1614. In 1628 he was sent to Canadà. He died at Bourges on 10 Apr. 1665.
