RAGUEL

RAGUEL (Heb. Rē'ḏēl = "Friend of God"). - Name of several figures of the Old Testament.

1. Priest of Midian and father of Zipporah, wife of Moses (Ex. 2:18), called elsewhere preferably Jethro (v.).

2. Relative of Tobit, residing in Ecbatana, capital of Media. On the journey from Nineveh to Rages the archangel Raphael (v.) advises Tobias to stop at this relative's house to ask for the hand of his daughter Sarah (Tob. 6:10 ff.). After the wedding is celebrated with great pomp, for 14 days, R. entrusts his daughter to Tobias with half of his estate (ibid. 10:16 ff.; Vulg. 10:10 ff.).

3. In the Septuagint version, a son of Esau (Vulg. Rahuel), a Benjaminite (Vulg. Rahuel) and a member of the tribe of Gad (Vulg. Duel) are also called R.
