RAIFFEISEN, FRIEDRICH WILHELM. - Originator and organizer of agricultural credit cooperatives, b. at Hamm on the Sieg on 30 March 1818, d. at Neuwied on 11 March 1888.
He was the first to conceive and to create the cooperative credit organization and the agricultural one which, together with those established by H. Schulze-Delitzsch for the workers and small tradesmen of the cities, increasingly established themselves victoriously also in Austria, Switzerland and Italy. After some years in the military career, R. entered the public administration, carrying out there for about 20 years the functions of mayor in some small towns. This public office put R. in direct contact with the populations, especially agricultural ones, whose needs he came to know, needs that had become particularly difficult following the famine of 1846-47. In order to overcome these sad conditions of the farmers, aggravated also by the bad use of credit and by usury, R. conceived and founded, contributing with his own
Babylonian account of the struggle of Marduk against Tiamat and the monsters that stood at her side.
