CATHERINE OF SANTA ROSA. - In the world Costanza Troiani, b. at Giuliano di Roma on 9 Feb. 1813. The victim of a family drama, at the age of six she was shut up in the monastery of the Poor Clares at Ferentino, where at fifteen she took the monastic habit and, for more than 30 years, worked actively at the asylum and at the works of the monastery.

Enthused by the deeds of Canon Battista Olivieri in Egypt for the redemption of the black girls, and encouraged by Fr. Giuseppe da S. Remo, of the Friars Minor, she set out for Egypt with 5 other sisters, arriving there on 11 Sept. 1859. In 1868 she founded the institute of the Franciscan Missionaries of Egypt (v.). She died at Cairo on 6 May 1887. In 28 years of missionary life and of labor for the salvation of souls, her patience and the fortitude of her spirit shone forth, united with a virile tenacity of purpose. The cause of her beatification is in progress.
