FRANCISCAN MISSIONARIES OF EGYPT. - A female religious institute founded in Cairo in 1859 on the initiative of Sister Caterina Troiani of St. Rose, who, with 5 sisters from the monastery of the Oblate Clarisses of Ferentino, had set out for Egypt at the invitation of the apostolic delegate Msgr. P. Guasco.

Having settled at Cot Bey, she opened a house there with an attached school for the instruction and education of young girls. Given the impossibility for the monastery of Ferentino to support the new work in Cairo, Mother Troiani obtained, by decree of the Sacred Congregation of Propaganda Fide of 3 July 1868, to constitute herself as an institute sui iuris under the name of F. M. d'E. Having thus opened the way to expansion, the foundress devoted herself with energy to the organization of her work, so that it was able to grow and open new houses, increasing the number of boarders. The Anglo-Egyptian war of 1882 bore down upon the new institute, which nevertheless was able to withstand the harsh trial. Today it is greatly developed and is spread throughout Egypt and the Near East, in Italy, in Tunisia, in Tripolitania and in Brazil.

In 1945 the houses numbered 130 with 1485 religious, all dedicated to teaching.
