CAVEDONI, Giacomo. — Painter, born in Sassuolo in 1577, died in Bologna in 1660. He ingeniously succeeded in blending the Carraccesque principles of his artistic training with the influences absorbed in Venice in 1603; aided in this by a lively sense of color, which sometimes allowed him to achieve remarkable chromatic effects.
His finest works are indeed those in which Venetian characteristics predominate, such as *St. Paul*, the *Nativity*, the *Adoration of the Magi* (1612–13), the *Virgin and St. Aloysius* (1621–1622), and the *Miracle at the Last Supper*, considered his masterpiece; all are preserved in Bologna. In Modena, an early Carraccesque work, *St. Stephen*, remains in the Gallery, while *The Baptism of Christ* is in S. Pietro.
