CECROPIO. – Bishop first of Laodicea, then transferred to Nicomedia by the emperor Constantius in 351. Severely judged by St. Athanasius for having secured his own elevation through plots and calumnies against the orthodox,
C., in the very year he was installed at Nicomedia, took part in the Synod of Sirmium and in the deposition of Photinus. He was one of the recipients of the letter in which George of Laodicea pointed out the danger to the faith in Antioch following the recognition of Aetius and his disciples by Patriarch Eudoxius, and demanded energetic measures to depose them. A deputation was then sent to Emperor Constantius, who annulled his previous decision in favor of Eudoxius and entrusted C. with conducting an inquiry against Aetius and his companions.
The bishop of Nicomedia died shortly afterward in the earthquake that destroyed the city (358).
