CENA, GIOVANNI. - Poet, journalist and critic, b. at Montanaro Canavese on 12 Jan. 1870, d. at Rome on 7 Dec. 1917. He studied at Turin, a pupil of A. Graf.
Having come to Rome, he was chief editor of La nuova antologia, and it was here that he carried on his principal activity.
He was concerned with morally uplifting the poor of the Roman countryside. Although of frail health, he devoted himself to his work, purely philanthropic, and, from nothing, overcoming difficulties of every kind, he established for children and adults 70 rural schools with clinics, seeking as collaborators doctors against malaria and teachers against ignorance and misery. He was the author of poems (his most substantial and pathetic work is the short poem Madre), of critical essays and of a novel, Gli ammonitori, of bold social vision, collected by the publishing house «L'Impronta» in the complete edition of his works in 5 vols. (Turin 1929). That of C. is a message of the humble, of the disinherited for whom living is too painful.
