NEW ANTOLOGY. - A literary periodical in the broadest sense, founded in Florence in 1866 by Francesco Protonotari as the ideal continuation of the Antologia (q.v.) and inspired by the Parisian Revue des deux mondes.
Of an eclectic character, it aimed and succeeded in exercising a concrete literary function in Italy, welcoming the collaboration of the most illustrious names in military literature and criticism, from Compartiti to Carducci, from Marradi to D'Ancona, from Rapisardi to Villari, from D'Annunzio to D'Ovidio, to Torraca, to De Sanctis.
The headquarters of the journal was transferred in 1878 to Rome, where it has remained ever since, except for a brief interval imposed by the Second World War (Florence 1944; Milan 1945 [3 issues]). The periodicity, originally monthly, was changed to fortnightly in 1878, reverting to monthly in 1943. After the death of Francesco Protonotari (1888), his brother Giuseppe succeeded him as director, followed by M. Ferraris, T. Tittoni, G. Gentile, L. Federzoni and, finally, M. Ferrara. Among the chief editors, noteworthy for the impetus they gave to the journal, are G. Cena, C. Viola and, most recently (1951), A. Baldini.
