NUOVA ANTOLOGIA. - A literary periodical in a very broad sense, founded in Florence in 1866 by Francesco Protonotari, as the ideal continuator of the Antologia (v.) and inspired by the Parisian Revue des deux mondes.

Eclectic in character, it aimed at and succeeded in exercising a concretely literary function in Italy, welcoming the collaboration of the most illustrious names in militant literature and criticism, from Comparetti to Carducci, from Marradi to D'Ancona, from Rapisardi to Villari, from D'Annunzio to D'Ovidio, to Torraca, to De Sanctis.

The journal's headquarters were transferred in 1878 to Rome, where it has always remained except for a brief interval imposed by the Second World War (Florence 1944; Milan 1945 [3 issues]). The frequency, originally monthly, was changed to fortnightly in 1878, to return to monthly in 1943. After the death of Francesco Protonotari (1888), he was succeeded in the direction by his brother Giuseppe, whom M. Ferraris, T. Tittoni, G. Gentile, L. Federzoni and, finally, M. Ferrara followed. Among the chief editors, mention should be made, for the impetus given to the journal, of G. Cena, C. Viola and lastly (1951) A. Baldini.
