CENTOCELLE. - This episcopal see, which the documents attest from the 5th century, had an ephemeral existence.

L. Duchesne is of the opinion that the bishops of C. (Subaugusta) were none other than those of Labicum at the fifteenth mile, residing there at that time, since the sources are simultaneously silent about the names of the bishops of the latter; on the contrary F. Lanzoni, and more recently T. Ashby and G. Lugli, with reasons that seem more persuasive, hold that they were properly the bishops of the place, of whom the certain ones are Crispianus in 465, Peter in 487, Maximian in 499 and Giocondo in 502. At about the fourth mile of the via Labicana, near today's airport of C., an imperial city had formed in the 4th century, a kind of military quarter and entrenched camp for the defense of the capital, which was called Subaugusta. The existence in the area of the imperial villa and mausoleum (Tor Pignattara) explains the origin of the episcopal see, which, however, was of very brief duration, because it ceased in the early years of the 6th century. Today only imposing ruins remain.
