CERVERI, BARTOLOMEO, blessed. — Dominican, martyr, born at Savigliano in 1420, died at Cervere on 21 April 1466. He studied at Turin, obtaining on the same day the degrees of licentiate and doctor, and admission to the college of doctors of the University. Professor at Turin, then prior at Savigliano and inquisitor of heretics, in the exercise of this office he displayed such zeal that he aroused the bitter hatred of his opponents; until five of them, attacking him while he was making his way to Cervere, where his mission had summoned him, pierced him with swords. Before departing, he had foretold his death. Pius IX approved his cult in 1853.
