CERVERI, BARTOLOMEO, BEATO

CERVERI, Bartolomeo, Blessed. - Dominican, martyr, b. at Savigliano in 1420, d. at Cervere on 21 April 1466. He studied at Turin, obtaining on the same day the degrees of licentiate, doctor and member of the college of doctors of the University. A professor at Turin, then prior at Savigliano, and inquisitor of heretics, in the exercise of this office he displayed such zeal that he drew upon himself a bitter hatred on the part of his adversaries; until five of them, attacking him as he was setting out for Cervere, where his mission had summoned him, ran him through with a sword. Before departing he had foretold his death. Pius IX approved his cult in 1853.
