BARTOLOMEO CERVERI, Blessed. — Dominican, martyr, born in Savigliano in 1420, died in Cervere on 21 April 1466. He studied in Turin, obtaining on the same day the degrees of licentiate, doctor, and membership in the college of doctors at the university. Professor at Turin, he later became prior in Savigliano and inquisitor of heretics. In the exercise of this office, he displayed such zeal that he incurred bitter hatred from his adversaries; finally, five of them, attacking him during his mission, stabbed him with swords. Before departing, he had foretold his own death. Pius IX approved his cult in 1853.
