CLARI, GIOVANNI CARLO MARIA. — Musician, b. in Pisa on 27 Nov. 1677, d. there on 16 May 1754. He first studied with his father GIOVANNI ANTONIO (maestro di cappella of the cathedral of Pistoia) and later with G. P. COLONNA in Bologna. He served as maestro di cappella in the cathedral at Pistoia (from 1720) and at Pisa (from 1736 until his death).
He composed oratorios including Adamo (1723), S. Cecilia (1711), La difesa della Verità e dell'Innocenza (1715), Ester (1715), S. Francesco (1728), L'innocenza difesa in Susanna, La morte di Saul, S. Nicolò (1716), S. Stefano, and much church music: masses (including some for eight voices), a Requiem, graduals, psalms, vespers, seven four-part hymns, Pange lingua, two Te Deum settings, four-part Stabat Mater with violins and violas (1744), Lamentationi de Giovedì Santo (for soprano), responsories, motets, etc., almost all of which are preserved in manuscript form in the libraries of Bologna, Milan, Pisa, Pistoia, Berlin, Cambridge, London, Regensburg, and Vienna. A four-part Ave maris stella with instruments was reprinted by Pecchiani in Pisa in 1931.
