CLARI, GIOVANNI CARLO MARIA. - Musician, b. at Pisa on 27 Nov. 1677, d. there on 16 May 1754. He studied first with his father Giovanni Antonio (choirmaster of Pistoia Cathedral) and then with G. P. Colonna in Bologna. He was choirmaster at the cathedral of Pistoia (from 1720) and of Pisa (from 1736 until his death).
He composed 11 oratorios, including Adama (1723), S. Cecilia (1711), La difesa della Verità e dell'Innocenza (1715), Ester (1715), S. Francesco (1728), L'innocenza difesa in Susanna, La morte di Saul, S. Nicolò (1716), S. Stefano, and much church music: masses (also for 8 voices), 1 Requiem, graduals, psalms, vespers, 7 hymns for 4 voices, Ponge lingua, 2 Te Deum, 1 Stabat Mater for 4 voices with violins and violas (1744), Lamentationi de Giovedì Santo (soprano), responsories, motets, etc., almost all preserved in manuscripts in the libraries of Bologna, Milano, Pisa, Pistoia, Berlin, Cambridge, London, Regensburg, and Vienna. An Ave maris stella for 4 voices with instruments was reprinted by Pecchiai in Pisa in 1931. Luisa Cervelli
