MARIA CONSIGLIO. - In religion Maria of the Holy Spirit, b. in Naples on 5 Jan. 1845, d. there on 11 Jan. 1900. Orphaned of father and mother, she lived for some years with her old grandmother amid indescribable hardships and privations, later compensated by spiritual gifts and joys. For her simplicity and gentleness she was called "the little saint," an appellation that remained with her until death.

Uneducated, she wrote works of asceticism: Getù e il Vangelo (Naples 1878), Amore e Croce (ibid. 1882), and she knew to perfection the Summa of St. Thomas. In 1872 she founded at Porta Romana, a hamlet of Nocera Inferiore, the Hermitesses of the of the Addolorata, for the care of orphan girls. The cause for her beatification is in progress.
