COVARRUVIAS, DIDACO. — Notable Spanish jurist, born in Toledo on 25 July 1512 and died in Madrid on 27 September 1577.
After studying under Martino de Azpilcueta (q.v.), he taught canon law at the University of Salamanca from 1543 and served as a counsellor to the Court of Granada. Elected Bishop of Ciudad Rodrigo in 1560, he took part in the Council of Trent, where he was tasked with drafting the *Decreta de Reformatione*. Returning to Spain, he was appointed Bishop of Segovia and later of Cuenca. His profound knowledge of canon and civil law earned him the title of the “Spanish Bartolus.” Works: *Epitome de sponsalibus et matrimoniis* (1545); *Variarum resolutionum ex iure pontificio, regio et caesareo libri quattuor* (1552–70); commentaries on the books of the Decretals and various other treatises.
