Crescenzio di Anagni

CRESCENZIO di ANAGNI. - Cardinal, lived between the 11th and 12th centuries. Together with Sasso, also of Anagni, and with a group of clerics from the Campagna, he owed his cardinalatial appointment to Giovanni of Gaeta, chancellor of Paschal II and later pope in his turn under the name Gelasius II. Of the presbyteral title of Sts. Marcellinus and Peter, he was, in 1130, among the electors of Anacletus II. Already rector of Benevento, during the preceding decade he returned under Anacletus to hold power there with a firm hand, amid the turmoil in which the factions threw the city. In May 1137 the imperial forces, led by Henry of Bavaria and animated by the presence of Innocent II, burst into Benevento and imprisoned C. there, who thus ended his activity.
