CRESCENZIO DI ANAGNI

CRESCENZIO di ANAGNI. — Cardinal, who lived between the 11th and 12th centuries. Together with Sasso, also from Anagni, and with a group of clerics from the Campagna, he owed his appointment as cardinal to Giovanni di Gaeta, chancellor of Pasquale II and later pope in his own right under the name of Gelasius II. Holding the presbyteral title of SS. Marcellino e Pietro, in 1130 he was among the electors of Anacleto II. Already rector of Benevento, during the preceding decade he returned there under Anacleto to wield power with a firm hand, amid the disturbances into which the factions were throwing the city. In May 1137 the imperial forces, led by Enrico di Baviera and encouraged by the presence of Innocenzo II, burst into Benevento and imprisoned C., thus bringing his activity to an end.
