CROTALUM (Κρόταλον, Crotalum). - A percussion instrument, corresponding to castanets, of Eastern origin, attested for Greece already before the 5th century B.C., and for Egypt as far back as the 2nd millennium. Used especially in dances, to mark the rhythm. It never entered into the use of the liturgy. However, the word crotalum, in the Ambrosian Missal and in the Memoriale rituum, was used to designate the clappers (v.), which replace the bells in the last days of Holy Week.
