The GREAT CYCLE. — Also called the *Easter cycle* or *great year*, it results from the combination of the 28-year solar cycle and the 19-year lunar cycle, forming a period of 532 years (28 × 19 = 532), after which the phases of the moon recur on the same dates and the same days of the week. It was used by the ancients for determining Easter and other movable feasts. In 457, VICTOR OF AQUITAINE counted its years from the Passion of Jesus Christ, which in his calculations corresponds to the year 28 of our era. DIONYSIUS EXIGUUS, in 526, based on the 19-year cycle of the Greeks and Alexandrians, made the year 10 of our era correspond to the 20th year of the great cycle.

The Victorian and Dionysian periods belong to the many chronological calculations devised to ensure that Easter would coincide worldwide on the same day, according
