DAR-ES-SALAAM (Arabic Dār-es-Salām), Apostolic Vicariate of. - This African mission (Tanganyika) was created as an apostolic prefecture on 16 Nov. 1887 with territory detached from Zanzibar (v.); it was named Southern Zanzibar and entrusted to the German Benedictines of St. Ottilien: on 10 Aug. 1906 it was elevated to an apostolic vicariate under its present name.

In the native uprising of 1905, besides the bishop, one priest, 4 brothers and 4 sisters were massacred. In 1913 the new apostolic prefecture of Lindi, today the nullius abbey of Peramiho (v.), was detached from it to the south. Following the war of 1914-'18, the German missionaries were repatriated, and in 1921 the vicariate was entrusted to the Swiss Capuchin fathers, who still retain and direct it. In 1921 the eastern part formed the new apostolic prefecture of Iringa (v.), which passed to the fathers of the Consolata. The mission has an area of 130,000 sq. km. and a population of half a million inhabitants, of whom more than 340,000 are Muslims, 110,000 pagans, 3,400 Protestants. Catholics number 30,000 and catechumens 6,476. The missionaries are (1948) 51, the brothers 43 and the sisters 54; they are assisted by 244 catechists and 203 teachers, the primary schools (60) are attended by 6,322 boys, the only secondary school by 100 students, the other schools (6) educate about 700 pupils. There are also orphanages, homes for the aged and for lepers.
