DAR-ES-SALAAM (Arabic Dār-es-Salām), APOSTOLIC VICARIATE of. - This African mission (Tanganyika) was created as an apostolic prefecture on 16 Nov. 1887, Zanzibar (v.), was called Southern Zanzibar, and entrusted to the German Benedictines of S. Ottilia; on 10 Aug. 1906 it was raised to an apostolic vicariate under its present name.
During the native uprising of 1905, besides the bishop, one father, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters were massacred. In 1913 the new apostolic prefecture of Lindi, now the nullus Peramiho (v.), was detached from it to the south. Following the war of 1914–18, the German missionaries were repatriated, and in 1921 the vicariate was entrusted to the Swiss Capuchin Fathers, who still retain and administer II. In 1921 the eastern part formed Iringa (v.), assigned to the Consolata Fathers. The mission has an area of 130,000 sq. km. and a population of half a million inhabitants, of whom more than 340,000 are Muslims, 110,000 pagans, and 3,400 Protestants. Catholics number 30,000 and catechumens 6,476. The missionaries number (1948) 51, the brothers 43, and the sisters 54; they are assisted by 244 catechists and 203 teachers. The primary schools (60) are attended by 6,322 children, the sole secondary school by 100 students, while the other schools (6) educate approximately 700 pupils. There are also orphanages and homes for the aged and lepers.
