DARRAS, JOSEPH-EPIPHANE. — Historian, born at Troyes in 1825, died in Paris on 8 Nov. 1878. He studied at Troyes, where he was ordained priest and obtained a teaching position, which he had to relinquish due to a panegyric on Étienne-Antoine de Boulogne, Bishop of Troyes, who at the Council of French bishops (1811) had refused to adhere to Napoleon’s proposals and was imprisoned.
D. then found a home with the Baufremont family, with whom he spent his entire life, completely devoted to his studies.
His principal works, though deficient in critical rigor, include: a translation of the *History of the Council of Trent* by Pallavicino (1848); *Histoire générale de l'Église* (1854); *Histoire de Saint Denis l'Aréopagite, premier évêque de Paris* (1863); *Histoire de Notre Seigneur Jésus-Christ* (1864); *Grande vie des saints* (1873–75), 25 vols. in collaboration with Collin; *Histoire de l'Église depuis la création*, of which the first 25 volumes were published during his lifetime.
