DE FELICE, GAETANO. - Journalist, b. in Naples on 24 Feb. 1863, d. in Rome on 20 June 1936.

After completing his literary studies in Naples at the school of Puoti and De Sanctis, he devoted himself at first to teaching, but soon moved on to Catholic journalism, of which he was for half a century one of the foremost exponents.

He successively founded Il guelfo, Il vero guelfo, La libertà (1897), and La discussione (1902) in his native city, and then came to Rome to direct the Giornale di Roma (1904), which was later transformed into the Corriere d'Italia (1906). Except for a brief interval during which he moved to the Osservatore Romano, De F. held the editorship of the Corriere until 1929, waging strenuous battles there in defense of the Catholic idea.

He also collaborated with a large part of the Italian Catholic press; he left numerous writings on various literary and historical subjects; and he militated with particular zeal in the ranks of Catholic Action. An ardent conciliationist, he had the good fortune to see the Lateran Pacts signed.
