DE FELICE, GAETANO. - Journalist, b. in Napoli on 24 Feb. 1863, d. in Roma on 20 June 1936.
Having completed his literary studies in Napoli at the school of Puoti and De Sanctis, he initially devoted himself to teaching, but soon turned to Catholic journalism, of which for half a century he was one of the foremost representatives.
He successively founded Il guelfo, Il vero guelfo, La libertà (1897), and La discussione (1902) in his native city, then came to Roma to edit the Giornale di Roma (1904), subsequently transformed into the Corriere d'Italia (1906). Except for a brief interval during which he joined the Osservatore Romano, De F. remained editor of the Corriere
until 1929, waging strenuous battles there in defense of the Catholic ideal.
He also contributed to a large part of the Italian Catholic press; he left numerous writings on various literary subjects and on history; and he took part with particular zeal in the ranks of Catholic Action. An ardent supporter of conciliation, he had the good fortune to see the Lateran Pacts signed.
