CURIONE, CELIO SECONDO. - Italian Protestant, b. at Ciriè (Piedmont) on 1 May 1503, d. at Basel on 24 Nov. 1569.
Having distinguished himself among the best Piedmontese humanists and being called, when little more than thirty, to teach in Pavia, there he met Mainardi (v.) who led him into the errors of the Reformers. Having subsequently moved to Venice, to Ferrara and to Lucca, where he formed a friendship with Vermigli (v.), he was at last obliged to leave Italy for fear of the Inquisition. He took refuge in Switzerland and obtained a chair of eloquence at the University of Basel, where, having refused flattering invitations from numerous universities of Europe, he spent the rest of his life, devoting himself with equal zeal to philological studies and to theology.
He engaged in lively polemics with various Reformed currents and had repeatedly to defend himself against the accusation of impiety and of anti-Trinitarianism; against Calvin himself he composed a work, De amplitudine beati regni Dei (1544), asserting that the number of the elect is far greater than that of the reprobate.
The most famous of his numerous writings is a collection of pasquinades against the Roman Church and Catholicism: the Pasquillus ecstaticus, published anonymously in 1544 and several times reprinted and translated into Italian, French and German.
