DE ROSSI, GIOVANNI ANTONIO. - Architect, b. in Rome in 1616, d. there on 9 October 1695. Raised in the environment dominated by the great personalities of Bernini, Borromini and Rainaldi, he linked the forms of his artistic language above all to certain classicistic aspects of the last of these, without however renouncing, especially in his decorative solutions, a tone of Borrominian taste.

Among his architectural works mention should be made of the Lancellotti chapel in St. John Lateran, the church of S. Rocco (1657), whose facade is 19th-century, the church of S. Maria in Campo Marzio built on a Greek cross between 1676 and 1686, the interior of the church of S. Pantaleo, and the chapel of the Monte di Pietà, often unjustly attributed to Mattia De Rossi. Among his secular buildings particularly notable are the part of the Palazzo Altieri facing the Piazza del Gesù, the Palazzo Muti, and the section intended for women in the hospital of S. Giovanni.
