DE ROSSI, MATTIA. – Architect, born in Rome on 14 Jan. 1637, died there on 2 Aug. 1695. He worked with Bernini and accompanied him to France. On the orders of Clement IX he directed the execution of the Palazzo dei Rossigliosi at Lamporecchio and the church of the Scipioni at Monterano.
At Bernini’s death he succeeded him in many posts, including that of architect of St Peter’s; he combined the teachings of his master with the study of Borromini’s works, producing designs marked by solid and elegant decoration. Among his works are remembered the design for the sepulchral monument of Clement X in St Peter’s, the façade of the church of S. Francesco a Ripa, the remodelling of S. Bonaventura de’ Lucchesi in Rome, the cathedral of Valmontone, and the construction of numerous Roman palaces, notable among which, for its anticipation of eighteenth-century taste, is the Palazzo Misciatelli in Piazza Venezia.
In France he also worked at the Louvre, completing some of Bernini’s designs.
