DE ROSSI, MATTIA. - Architect, born in Rome on 14 Jan. 1637, died there on 2 Aug. 1695; he worked with Bernini and accompanied him to France. At the behest of Clement IX he supervised the construction of the Rospigliosi palace at Lamporecchio and of the church of the Piarists at Monterano.
Upon Bernini’s death he succeeded him in many offices, among others that of architect of S. Pietro; he combined the teachings of his master with the study of Borromini’s works, producing works conceived with solid and elegant decoration. Among others, mention may be made of the design for the funerary monument of Clement X in S. Pietro, the façade of the church of S. Francesco a Ripa, the rebuilding of S. Bonaventura de' Lucchesi in Rome, the cathedral of Valmontone, and the construction of numerous Roman palaces, among which that of Misciattelli in piazza Venezia is noteworthy for its anticipation of eighteenth-century taste.
In France he also worked for the Louvre, bringing to completion some of Bernini’s designs.
