DE WULF, MAURICE. - Distinguished historian of medieval philosophy, born at Poperinge in Belgium on 6 Apr. 1867 and died there on 23 Dec. 1947.
From 1894 onward he was one of Mercier’s most active collaborators, both in editing the Revue néoscolastique de philosophie and in teaching at the Institut supérieur de philosophie of Louvain. He was responsible for the great collection of medieval texts, Les philosophes belges (1901 ff.), and for an extensive scholarly output directed especially toward discovering and illustrating the monuments of medieval thought in his homeland. D. W.’s name remains associated with his Histoire de la philosophie médiévale (6th ed., Louvain-Paris 1934-36; 2nd Italian trans., Milan-Florence 1944-
1948), enriched by a third volume (1947) encompassing the 14th-15th centuries and reaching the threshold of Humanism.
