DEL RICCO, GAETANO. - Piarist, mathematician, b. in Florence on June 3, 1756, d. there on Feb. 4, 1818. He studied mathematics under Fr. Canovai, with whom he later joined forces for the mathematical works that made their name famous throughout Italy and beyond. Appointed first director of the Ximenian Observatory in Florence, he immediately improved its conditions, also seeing to its expansion.
Del Ricco's activity was more that of a scholar than of a scientist; he oversaw the republication of several scientific works, such as the famous Tavole of Gardiner and the Corso di matematiche of Marie, reorganized and enriched not only with many additions but with entirely new treatises. Assisted by Canovai, he began astronomical works when he had as pupil and assistant the young Piarist Giovanni Inghirami. He discerned the talent of this pupil of his and prepared him seriously to have him as successor, sending him to Milan so that he might study under the Lombard astronomers Oriani and De Cesaris. Other duties of various kinds weighed on Del Ricco, especially as provincial superior of Tuscany in Napoleonic times, all of which he discharged in his own distinguished way, having been a model of a perfect Piarist.
