DELPINO, FEDERICO. – Botanist, born in Chiavari on 7 December 1833, died in Naples on 14 May 1905. In Florence he worked in the botanical museum and was appointed professor at the forestry institute of Vallombrosa. He subsequently held chairs in Genoa, Bologna, and Naples. He developed an anti-Darwinian and anti-materialist conception. He devoted himself to the fertilization of plants and may be considered the founder of plant biology.
