DIEGO di Gesù. - Discalced Carmelite theologian, Diego Salablanca in the world, born at Granada (Spain) in 1570, died at Toledo on 3 Sept. 1621. In 1586 he became a Carmelite and for many years was professor of scholastic theology at the celebrated college of the Order in Alcalá. He was one of the finest sacred orators of his time and a profound mystic. A man of holy life, he died while serving as definitor general.
His works: Commentaria in logicam Aristotelis (Madrid 1608); he edited the first edition of the works of St. Giovanni della Croce (Alcalá 1618), but without the Cautico; he did, however, add to the edition an introduction to those works: Apuntamientos para la más fácil inteligencia de los escritos de N. S. P. Juan de la Cruz. He also composed spiritual poems, published after his death by D. Martin de Ugalde: Conceptos espirituales (Madrid 1668).
