DIEGO OF JESUS. - Discalced Carmelite theologian, in the world Diego Salablanca, b. in Granada (Spain) in 1570, d. at Toledo on Sept. 3, 1621. In 1586 he became a Carmelite, and for many years he was professor of scholastic theology in the Order's famous college at Alcalá. He was one of the best sacred orators of his time and a profound mystic. A man of holy life, he died while serving as definitor general.

His works: Commentaria in logicam Aristotelis (Madrid 1608); he oversaw the first edition of the works of St. John of the Cross (Alcalá 1618), but without the Cántico; he did, however, add to the edition an introduction to those same works: Apuntamientos para la más fácil inteligencia de los escritos de N. S. P. Juan de la Cruz. He also composed spiritual poems, published after his death by D. Martin de Ugalde: Conceptos espirituales (Madrid 1668).
