DIONIGI della NATIVITÀ and REDENTO della CROCE, blessed. — D. della N., a Discalced Carmelite, in the world Pietro Berthelot, born on 12 December 1600 at Honfleur in Normandy. As a young man he devoted himself to commercial navigation and travelled in England, Spain, the East Indies, Java, and Malacca; in 1629 he landed in Goa, where he won the esteem of the Portuguese authorities, who on 22 September of that same year appointed him chief pilot of a powerful fleet sent to defend Malacca, besieged by the king of Achen. After achieving a splendid victory, he was confirmed in perpetuity by the viceroy of Goa in the office of chief pilot and cosmographer of the Indies.
After these successes he decided to abandon his military career; having entered the Order of Discalced Carmelites, he took his vows in 1636.
On 25 September 1638 he was selected, on account of his nautical expertise (some navigational charts by him are extant, Tabulae maritimae) and his knowledge of the Malay language, to take part in an embassy that the Portuguese were sending to the new king of Achén on the island of Sumatra.
