DITTRICH, FRANZ. — Historian, b. 26 Jan. 1839 at Thegsten (Ermland), d. 21 Feb. 1915 at Frauenburg. He studied philosophy and theology at the Hosianum lyceum in Braunsberg, and after being ordained a priest in 1863 he continued his studies in Munich, under Döllinger and Phillips. A university professor of history and of ecclesiastical law, he concerned himself above all with the period of the Reformation and with the local history of Warmia. He was also a deputy in the Prussian Diet.
A contributor to the Historisches Jahrbuch and director from 1898 of the Zeitschrift für die Geschichte und Altertumskunde Ermlands, he studied with passion the figure of Cardinal G. Contarini (Regesten und Briefe des Kardinals Gasparo Contarini, Braunsberg 1881; Gasparo Contarini, ibid. 1885). He also wrote a book on the Kulturkampf in Warmia (Der Kulturkampf im Ermlande, ibid. 1913).
