DOMINIC LORICATO, Saint. - Camaldolese of the Congregation of Fonte Avellana, b. ca. 995 in the Piceno, on the Umbrian border, d. at Frontale on 14 Oct. 1660. Having been ordained a priest simoniacally by his parents, he spent some years among the secular clergy; but ca. 1025, having learned of the irregularity of his ordination, he renounced the exercise of the sacred Order and became a hermitmonk, at Luceoli (today Ponte-Riccioli), then, ca. 1043, he moved to Fonte Avellana, under the guidance of St. Peter Damian.
D., reviving the spirit of the ancient public penances, wished to practice them with such incredible harshness as to make his life a miracle.
He was for some time prior of the hermitage of S. Maria in Sitria, then (1059) of that of Mons Suavicius (S. Vicino, Frontale), continuing there his terrible mortifications until death. His body is venerated in the parish church of S. Anna in Frontale (diocese of S. Severino Marche), where his hair shirt or lorica is also preserved, whence the name "Loricato." Feast on 14 Aug.
