DUBOURG, LOUIS-GUILLAUMÉ-VALENTIN

LOUIS-GUILLAUME-VALENTIN DUBOURG. – Second bishop of Louisiana and Florida, b. at Cap François (S. Domingo) on 16 Feb. 1766, d. at Besançon on 12 Dec. 1833. Ordained priest in 1788 at Paris, he entered the Society of St. Sulpice. The Revolution forced him to emigrate to the United States (1794). He was rector of Georgetown College from 1796 to 1799, when he became the first superior of St. Mary’s College in Baltimore. On 18 Aug. 1812 he was named Apostolic Administrator of Louisiana and Florida, reorganized the diocese, and was appointed its bishop. Consecrated at Rome on 24 Sept. 1815, he returned to the United States in 1817. In 1826 he left the United States and was appointed Bishop of Montauban, where he remained until his appointment as Archbishop of Besançon (25 Feb. 1833).
