DUNIN, MARTIN von. - Prelate, b. November 11 at Wat near Rawa (Poland), d. December 26, 1842 at Posen. Ordainedpriest in 1797, he was elected in 1829 administrator of the diocese of Posen. Consecrated archbishop in 1831, he found himself in conflict with the Prussian authority over the question of mixed marriages, for remaining faithful to the brief of Pius VIII of March 25, 1830 that regulated the matter. The authority tried in vain to make him desist from his dutiful line of conduct and opened an inquiry regarding him. D. was condemned in 1839 to 6 months of detention in a fortress, which were commuted for him to forced residence in Berlin. Having nevertheless returned to Posen for the governance of the diocese in October of the same year, he was arrested and confined in the fortress of Kolberg. Only in August 1840, after the accession to the throne of Frederick William IV, did the archbishop resume the governance of his diocese.
