DUNIN, MARTIN von. — Prelate, b. Nov. 11 at Wat near Rawa (Poland), d. Dec. 26, 1842 at Poznań. Ordained priest in 1797, he was elected in 1829 administrator of the diocese of Poznań. Considered archbishop in 1831, he found himself in conflict with Prussian authority over the issue of mixed marriages, remaining faithful to the brief of Pius VIII of Mar. 25, 1830 that regulated the matter. The authority vainly attempted to make him abandon his dutiful course of action and opened an inquiry against him. D. was sentenced in 1839 to six months’ imprisonment in a fortress, which was commuted to house arrest in Berlin. Nonetheless, he returned to Poznań in Oct. of the same year to govern the diocese, was arrested, and confined in the fortress of Kołobrzeg. Only in Aug. 1840, after the accession of Frederick William IV, did the archbishop resume governance of his diocese.
