DUPHOT, LÉONARD. - French general, b. 21 Sept. 1769 in Lyon, d. 28 Dec. 1797 in Rome. Nourished by a good education at the college of Jully, he embraced a military career in 1785, enlisting as a common soldier. He was part of the Army of the Eastern Pyrenees, and in Nov. 1793 he was promoted to brigadier general. In 1796 he was transferred to the Army of Italy. After the armistice of Leoben he was sent by Bonaparte to Genoa to reorganize the troops of the Ligurian Republic. An ardent Jacobin, he found himself in Rome in Nov.-Dec. 1797 and supported the anti-papal attempts of the Roman revolutionaries. He was killed in the course of a skirmish between the Roman republicans and the pontifical soldiers. The death of D. offered Bonaparte a pretext for occupying Rome.
