Eberhard, Matthias

EBERHARD, MATTHIAS. - Bishop of Trier, b. 1 Nov. 1815 at Trier, d. there, 30 May 1876. Ordained priest in 1839, he taught dogmatics at the Seminary of Trier, which he headed from 1849 to 1862. A deputy in the Prussian diet, in 1853 he asked the government for more equitable treatment of the ministers of the Catholic faith, who found themselves at a disadvantage compared with Protestant ministers. Bishop of Trier in 1867, he firmly opposed the anti-Catholic laws during the period of the Kulturkampf, and for this stance of his he was arrested and held in prison from 6 March to 31 Dec. 1874.
