ELBECQUE, NORBERT d’. – Dominican theologian and writer, born at Hainaut (Belgium) in 1651, died at Namur on 14 October 1714. He was professor of philosophy at Louvain and of moral theology at Mons en Hainaut; in 1700 he became a member of the first college of theologians attached to the Biblioteca Casanatense. Returning to his homeland, in 1707 he became regent of the general house of studies at Louvain and then prior at Namur.
Among his works are remembered: De adveritentia requisita ad peccandum formaliter (Liège 1693); Distalatio schematis Wichiani (Antwerp 1708, followed by an appendix in 1709). d’E. also edited the works of F. Sylvius in 6 vols. (Antwerp 1698), the Compendium of the moral theology of Noel Alexandre in 4 vols. (Rome 1705), and the Historia Congregationum de Auxiliis of Fr. G. Serry (Antwerp 1709).
