ENGELTAL. - An ancient Dominican convent in the diocese of Eichstätt (Bavaria). A group of beguines led by a certain Adelaide founded this convent around 1240; it was endowed by Ulrico von Königstein. Innocent IV confirmed it on 10 Oct. 1248.
The community is attested as a centre of Dominican mysticism in the three writings Von der genaden überlast (which also deals with its foundation), in the “revelations” of the remarkable Cristina Ebro, and in the visions of the generous and gentle Adelaide Langmann. Many daughters of patrician Nuremberg families entered E. Raimondo da Capua and the Gaetano gave regulations for monastic reform. In 1565-66 the community was dissolved; its property served to endow the Academy and subsequently the University of Altdorf.
