ENGELTAL. – An ancient Dominican monastery in the diocese of Eichstätt (Bavaria). A group of Beguines led by a certain Adelaide founded this monastery in 1240, which was donated by Ulrich von Königstein. Innocent IV confirmed it on 10 October 1248.
The community is documented as a center of Dominican spirituality in three writings: Von der genauen überlast (which also deals with the foundation), in the "revelations" of the admirable Christina Ebner, and in the visions of the generous and gentle Adelaide Langmann. Many daughters of noble Nuremberg families entered Engelthal. Raymond of Capua and Gaetano gave norms for the monastic reform. In 1565–56 the community was dissolved, and its assets were used to endow the Academy and later the University of Altdorf.
