ECCARDO il GIOVANE. - Dominican preacher and mystical writer, whose life and works are still shrouded in obscurity. A disciple of Meister Eckart, he brought distinction to the convent of Erfurt. He died while returning from the General Chapter of Valence in 1337, which he had attended as definitor of the province of Saxony (Mon. O. P. Historica, IV, p. 258).
J. W. Preger and A. Dempf identify him with the definitor E. von Gründig. Preger published fragments of writings and the treatise Von der wirkenden und möglichen Vernunft (Sitzungsber., I, Monaco 1871, pp. 176-89). Two sermons and a letter are found in the Cologne edition of Taulero’s works (1603; pp. 11-13, 46-48, ep. xxv; pp. 807-808). Ph. Strauch (Paradisus animus intelligenter [Paradis der vor- nuftigen sele: Deutsche Texte des Mittelalters, 30], Berlino 1919) is in favour of E. Rube.
