ECCARD THE YOUNGER. — Dominican preacher and mystical writer, whose life and works are still shrouded in darkness. A disciple of Meister Eckhart, he taught at the Erfurt convent. He died in 1337 while returning from the General Chapter of Valence, where he had served as definer for the Saxon province (Mon. O. P. Histoica, IV, p. 258).
J. W. Preger and A. Dempf identify him with the definer E. von Gründig. Preger published fragments of his writings and the treatise *Von der wirkenden und möglicher Vernunft* (Sitzungsber., I, Munich 1871, pp. 176–89). Two sermons and a letter are found in the edition of the works of Tauler of Cologne (1637; pp. 11–13, 46–48, ep. xxv; pp. 87–88). Ph. Strauch (*Paradis der von nuftigen sele: Deutsche Texte des Mittelalters*, 30, Berlin 1919) considers him to be E. Rube.
