EPITRACHELIO (ἘΠΙΤΡΑΧΉΛΩΝ, DETTO ANCHE ΠΕΡΙΤΡΑΧΉΛΩΝ)

EPITRACHELION (Ἐπιτραχήλιον, also called Περιτραχήλιον). - It is the priestly stole which, like that of the deacon, is formed by a long band of silk, of the color of the phelonion or chasuble, whose two ends are joined at the front, leaving a space through which the neck can pass: hence its name. It is adorned with crosses and fringes and symbolizes the Grace of the Lord infused into the soul of the priest. In the cheirotonia of the priest, the bishop takes the stole that as a deacon he wore hanging from the left shoulder and passes one of its ends behind the neck, exclaiming ἄξιος, as he does for each of the ornaments or distinctive marks of the order conferred. The priest must wear the e. in all ecclesiastical functions, even when he does not put on the phelonion.
