ESCOBAR, ANDREA de. - Very well-known Benedictine theologian and canonist of the 15th century, b. in Lisbon. His works, for the most part unpublished, have been handed down to posterity in an extraordinarily large number of manuscripts. He took part in the Councils of Constance, Basel and Ferrara-Florence; before the latter he abjured his rigid conciliarist ideas.

Most worthy of note is his treatise De Graecia arrantibus, composed as a norm for the future union of Florence. In it, besides the originality in the parts worked out independently of his model St. Thomas, he was the first to advance the principle not only of the validity but also of the legitimacy of the different rites in the Church, which must likewise be respected without giving preference to the Latin rite, provided they are not tainted by doctrinal errors.

Many have written on E., but the facts of his life, in the absence until now of a true knowledge of the sources, are generally presented with little critical certainty.
