EUTYCHUS (Εὐτύχος). - A young man raised from the dead by St. Paul at Troas (Acts 20:9-12). With the recklessness proper to his age (he is called first ναυτάς, v. 9, then παῖς, v. 12), he was sitting in the recess of a window on the third floor where Paul was speaking to the community gathered for the Sunday "breaking of bread"; overcome by sleep during Paul's prolonged nighttime conversation, he fell to the ground. The Apostle, repeating the gesture of Elijah (1 Kings 17:21) and of Elisha (2 Kings 4:34), bent over the dead man and restored him to life.

The Apostle's words "Do not be troubled: his soul is still in him" (v. 10), which may also be a form of modesty, as he observes that life has returned, have been taken, wrongly, as an indication that the miracle lies only in the interpretation of the crowd or of the narrator. Luke, an eyewitness (the "we" passage), with the exactness of a physician, emphasizes the severity of the fall and the death easily established. For this reason the community is enthusiastic in leading E. away alive at the moment of Paul's departure.
