ETHAN (Heb. 'Ethān = Firm, Stable). - Three or four biblical figures.
1. Descendant of Zerah (Heb. Zerah), famous for his wisdom. In 1 Kings 4:31 (Heb. 5:11), to magnify Solomon's knowledge, he is placed before that of E. In the title of Ps. 88 (Heb. 89), E. is designated as the author of the hymn. It is unlikely that this is the same person.
4. In Ps. 73 (Heb. 74):15, the Vulgate has the curious reading fhuios E. In reality it is a common noun ("perpetuity, strength") and the sense of the expression is "perennial rivers." Angelo Penna
