FALCONI, Juan, Venerable. - Mercedarian, b. at Fifiana in 1596, d. in 1638. He was a professor at Segovia and at Alcalá.
In his writings Cartilla para saber leer en Cristo, Vida de Dios, Memento de la Misa, El pan nuestro de cada día (all posthumous; for the editions cf. Dudon, pp. IX-X), F., in the impossibility of meditating, postulates the contemplative method; total resignation to the will of God can replace the reasoning method. Accused of belonging to the sect of the Alumbados, he had to clear himself of the charge in 1629. The fortune of F.'s writings was enormous among Molinos and the Italian Quietists; of the Alfabeto per saper leggere in Christo the editions of Lecce 1660, of Rome 1665, 1669, 1680 are counted.
On 1 April 1688 the following Italian translations were condemned by the Holy Office (in addition to the earlier Alfabeto): Lettera scritta ad una figlinale spirituale nella quale l'insegna il più puro e perfetto spirito dell'orazione; Lettera scritta ad un religioso in difesa del modo d'orazione in pura fede da lui insegnato. Probably the Italian translations were placed on the index not for the doctrine in itself, but rather for the danger that a false reading could bring in swelling the Quietist blaze of the second half of the 17th century.
