FARHĀT, Germano. – Archbishop, born in Aleppo on 20 November 1870, died there on 10 July 1732. He studied at the Maronite school directed by Pietro Tuliàvi, then at the Maronite College in Rome. In 1695 he entered the nascent Maronite Antonine Order but left when a dispute arose over whether it should adopt an active or contemplative orientation. Once the disagreement was resolved in 1705, F. returned to the Order. He served as Superior General from 1716 to 1724 and was consecrated Archbishop of Aleppo in 1725, where he reorganized the Maronite School, in which learned men taught and wrote books in Arabic under his guidance.
Among his numerous and varied works, notable are an Arabic dictionary (*Bāb al-ʿadah*); an Arabic grammar (*Bahāʾ al-Matāʾah*), which, printed and annotated several times, remained in use in schools until recent times; precepts of eloquence (*Faṣl al-khiṭābah*), a book so highly regarded that it was first printed by Protestants, albeit with alterations, and later republished from the original in 1867; and his *Dīwān*, a collection of his own poems, of which various editions exist.
