ADAM, GERMANUS. - B. at Aleppo, d. Oct. 10, 1809. Bishop from 1774, after having been patriarchal vicar of Acre, in 1777 he was elected archbishop of Aleppo. Pius VI (Dec. 5, 1787) appointed him apostolic delegate for the Maronites at the national Synod held in 1790. The Aleppo review al-Kourbane, 1931, pp. 230 ff. and 322 ff. lists the manuscripts of A.'s works, not all of them published. His doctrine, however, is not orthodox, and Pius VII (after having ordered on Feb. 13, 1802 that he and his followers subscribe to Pius VI's brief Super soliditatem, which condemned Eybel's book on the Pope, and to the bull Auctorem fidei of the same Pontiff, which condemned the Synod of Pistoia) prohibited (1816-22) A.'s books, which he had laudably submitted to the judgment of the Holy See. Also the Synod of Qarqafah, held in 1806, chiefly through A.'s efforts (Mansi, iv 812 ff.), was condemned by Gregory XVI on June 3, 1835, because in it, among other things, "with bad faith it was tainted by the already condemned Synod of Pistoia."
