ADAM, GERMANO. - Born in Aleppo, died 10 October 1809. Bishop from 1774, after having been patriarchal vicar of Acre, in 1777 he was elected archbishop of Aleppo. Pius VI (5 Dec. 1787) appointed him apostolic delegate for the Maronites at the national Synod held in 1790. The Aleppo journal al-Kourbane, 1931, pp. 230 ff. and 322 ff., lists the manuscripts of A.’s works, not all of which were published. His doctrine, however, was not orthodox, and Pius VII (after having ordered, on 13 Feb. 1802, that he and his followers subscribe to the brief of Pius VI Super soliditatem, which condemned Eybel’s book on the Pope, and to the bull Auctorem fidei of the same Pontiff, which condemned the Synod of Pistoia) prohibited (1816–22) A.’s books, which he had commendably submitted to the judgment of the Holy See. The Synod of Qarqafah, celebrated in 1806, chiefly through the efforts of A. (Mansi, iv 812 ff.), was likewise condemned by Gregory XVI on 3 June 1835, because in it, among other things, « with bad faith recourse was had to the already condemned Synod of Pistoia ».
